Studying the Extended Project Qualification

What is it?

The EPQ is an A-level standard standalone qualification designed to extend and develop your abilities as you prepare for university or your future career.

It is worth half an A-level (28 UCAS points), and is recognised by universities and employers. Many universities will make lower A-level offers to students undertaking an EPQ, so it is worth completing The EPQ allows students to lead their own projects

How does it work?

You will have the opportunity to plan and carry out research on a topic that you've chosen – it does not have to fit in with your other qualifications, and is a great way to show prospective universities or employers more about you.

You might choose to take inspiration from something you’ve looked at in class, or you may prefer to focus on something more personal and completely unrelated to your studies. You will then use this research to produce a written report and, in the case of practical projects, an artefact or a production.

Why do it?

By taking responsibility for the choice, design and decision making of your individual projects (or an individual role in a group project) you will:

  • become a more critical, reflective and independent learner

  • develop and apply decision-making and problem-solving skills

  • increase your planning, research, analysis, synthesis, evaluation and presentation skills

  • learn to apply technologies confidently

  • demonstrate creativity, initiative and enterprise
