Is Medicine Right For You?

The following pages have been written by two students who are successfully studying medicine at higher education - Alexandra Holland and Madison Wood-Field.

Medicine is a lifelong career, but with that, comes a tough application process and a long and expensive (on paper) training process. Therefore, I think it is really important for you to be sure that it is right for you as much as you can.

I think there is no better way to help you decide than to get first-hand experience in the field. Try to get as much experience as you can in a variety of areas, but at the same time, find a balance, as it is quality over quantity. Look at the work experience section for more information.

Also make sure that you are set to achieve the grades that you will need. Generally speaking, the expectation is that all applicants will be predicted 3 A’s at a minimum, so remember this when you are applying.

If medicine is something you really want to do, don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t. Yes, the application process can be stressful and you need high grades, but if you put your head down and work for it, it is more than possible. And remember that 1 offer is just as impressive as 4. At the end of the day, you can only go to one medical school, and with how competitive they are, an offer from any one of them is a huge accomplishment!
