Film Studies

A-level

A-Level Film Studies takes you on a journey through more than a century of cinema. You will explore the evolution of film from the silent era and early Hollywood to contemporary American movies, gaining a deep appreciation for its artistic and cultural development.

You will master the key elements of film form - including cinematography, mise-en-scene, editing, and sound - and analyse how they create meaning. We will place our set texts within their original context, investigating how historical events and societal values shaped their production and the on-screen representations they present or challenge.

Throughout the course, you will engage with advanced critical concepts such as spectatorship, narrative theory, ideology, and the role of the auteur, preparing you for the key theoretical debates in film studies today.
